The Napa Operator

Discussion of Zodiac Victims Shepard & Hartnell

The Napa Operator

Postby Chaucer » Tue Nov 17, 2020 2:59 pm

Much has been made about the fact that only three people heard Zodiac's voice:

Nancy Slover
Bryan Hartnell
Dave Slaight

But, this isn't true. We also know that the PT&T operator who connected Zodiac to Slover also spoke to Zodiac for an indeterminate amount of time. At least, that is what we can surmise despite their being no official documentation.

However, the operator who transferred Zodiac's call to Dave Slaight after the LB attack ALSO spoke to Zodiac. In fact, it's documented:

https://www.zodiackiller.com/LBReport32.html

The operator states that the "man had refused to give the number when he placed the call". So, it seems likely that Zodiac dialed the operator and asked for the police. Standard procedure at the time called for operators to ask for the nature of the call or emergency and what number the caller was calling from in case of disconnection. Zodiac repeatedly refused to provide the number until the operator relented and passed the call through.

This is not insignificant. It's possible this woman had a longer interaction on the phone with Zodiac than Slover or Slaight. What insights or clues might she have had?

My question is this: was any attempt made to speak with this operator? Has she ever been identified?

Good point but the same rules would apply to this operator as well that prevented the operator who took the Vallejo call from speaking.

If it was PT&T then no comply.

Slaight said that Zodiac was young-sounding, even college age. Slaight might have heard a more honest representation of his speaking voice than Slover did in the strange "good-bye" call.

Pretty remarkable PT&T could no comply even with a murder investigation.

Yeah, I know that PT&T had ironclad rules about that at the time, but I wonder if it is still possible to identify and locate the operator. I know it's a longshot, but I was actually able to locate and speak to a woman who work as an operator in Vallejo in 1969 and knew both Betty Main and Mrs. Johnson referred to in the police report. Napa wasn't that big of a town at the time.

I'll throw some [redacted] against the wall and see what sticks. I'll keep you updated.
