He lived many years a free man despite his record, and then he was given the choice to end his days with 3 free meals a day and medical assistance if needed. No one would pick death penalty if given the choice, but even less in the circumstances I've just described.

The death penalty can only be imposed by a jury and this process would have taken years. Some of the victims have died over the years due to the passage of time. A guilty plea and expedited resolution was the best solution in this case.

California has a moratorium on executions and hasn't executed anyone for years. It was really a moot point anyway.
