Toschi sure became an easy target after that and it would make sense he would be investigated, but it (imo) makes just as much sense Maupin would need to be investigated as well. He obviously held a grudge. Payback is a bitch. ;)

There is no proof of any wrongdoing. It's like saying did Herb Caen fake the 1987 Letter.

Somebody did some wrong doing and it's awfully convenient Maupin was ready and willing to throw Toschi under the bus. And it's also interesting considering the letter specifically mentions Toschi...praising him...which is what Toschi did (in a sense) in the letters to Maupin.

If it wasn't Zodiac who wrote the letter, who would want to praise Toschi?

Look at the tone of the fake letters Toschi wrote about how wonderful/smart he was. In the '78 letter we have someone who says the same thing, but that HE is "smarter and better" than Toschi. Sounds to me like someone sticking it to Toschi!

Fake Toschi letter: "Too bad someone doesn't do a book on him"
Fake Zodiac letter: "I am waiting for a good movie about me"

Below the typed letters it mentions "Herb Caen" received fake Toschi letters, and the fake Zodiac letter mentions Herb Caen.

(While I don't think Toschi wrote the fake '78 letter, you have to admit these below are pretty pathetic)

Chief Gain said at the time that Toschi did not write the 1978 letter, he also said that Zodiac did not write it.

Added some points in bold to my post above.

If the '78 letter writer was not Toschi, it was Maupin & friends. I have no doubt.

They are the only two who knew this stuff...take your pick.

It was Graysmith! He had access to all the letters. He was writing a book and needed to renew interest. His 1977 340 cipher solution mentions Herb Cain Toschi and Pig, then in 1978 a letter arrives that mention these same things.

But it doesn't matter who faked it! What matters is what we learned about Zodiac from it. With all the media attention, he stayed silent.
Why? Was he already dead?

Graysmith's book didn't come out for another 10 years and by then the '78 letter was known to Graysmith.

Of course we know you think Zodiac was dead, but Zodiac didn't challenge hundreds of fake letters received.

I find it odd the people who support Morrill so adamantly when it comes to a poem carved into a desk with a pen, then dismiss the '78 letter--a letter Morrill was SURE was authentic, a letter written on paper. He was so sure about it that he was angry people didn't have faith in him and if I'm not mistaken, he even wanted to cut ties with the S.F.P.D. he was so angry about it.

He got a copyright for it in 1977, when it was set to come out.

Hundreds? Really? He stopped in 1974 and 78 was the first major coverage since the early 70's. Do you really think that is not significant?

Bullitt mentions some of this here:
http://www.zodiackillerfacts.com/forum/ ... 7&start=70

But hey, RG couldn't possibly be forger even though he was in the best possible position to do it with his access to all the letters.
