Tom Voigt of zodiackiller.com recently marked the 45 year anniversary of the Paul Stine murder with a SF event attended by members of his site. Some pretty good info and stuff came out of the event, and Tom said that I could post info here about the event. It's worth checking out as follows:

I attended the event. Tom scheduled a trolley that took us around on a couple hour tour of different locations associated with the case, such as the video of the mail box. Then we met up in the evening and took yellow cabs from the location that it is believed Z got into the cab to the Paul Stine crime scene. That is where the former detective spoke with us. Once he was finished we walked what was believed to be a possible escape route of Z that night. It was an interesting experience and was nice meeting people that post on the site.

Wow, I never knew that there were two known mailboxes Zodiac used.

The one in the video is on Taraval by 23rd (way out in the avenues, and just about 12 blocks from Toschi's house).
The other, Tom mentions, is on the east side of Van Ness. Tom mentions it is near a hobby shop, so I'm guessing it's the one at the SE corner of Van Ness and Union.

Two very different locations. I would guess Z used random mailboxes, and probably not ones near the location Z resided.

Does anyone have more info on all this? What letters in what box?

i've never heard that any particular mailbox was used, simply that a few of the postmarks indicate the region in which the letter was mailed.

I'm starting to think that what Tom claims about the mailboxes is just a rumor. Unless Tom can provide some kind of info as to why he thinks these are known mailboxes.

I say this because almost all envelopes have postmarks, meaning they were processed at a postal facility. Maybe that had a way of knowing what boxes mail came from?
Doubtful a postal worker recognized a letter at the street box and then had it possessed.

The only two letters without postmarks appear to be the pines card and the SLA card.
Maybe they found the pines card in a mailbox, but I doubt in 1974 they would recognized the SLA. Tom is claiming two mailboxes.

Also worth noting that the "SLA" robbed a bank at 1450 Noriega Street, close to the Taraval mailbox.

So the nice cop in the video, SF Police Dept. Inspector Vince Repetto, IMO has to be the the nephew of Sherwood Morrill since he in the video said that his uncle worked the Zodiac case as a document examiner and that the uncle once said that he would be able to recognize Zodiac's handwriting anytime/anywhere or something to that effect.

Now I deeply wish that if this SF Police Dept. Inspector Vince Repetto indeed is Morrill's nephew that he could get hold of copies of Morrill's notes on the zodiac case and share them with us & the different Zodiac forums.

I wish somone could get hold of Sherwood Morrill´s notes/files on the Zodiac case.
I wish he had written a book about the Zodiac case, and his thoughts on all the individual letters + his thoughs in general on the case.

And this info always baffled me big time:

In Sherwood Morrill's obituary in the Sacramento Bee (3-23-1988, p. C2),there were some interesting tidbits: he died at the age of 73 on 3-19-1988 It said:

"Among his most famous cases was the Zodiac killer, in which Mr. Morrill cleared nearly 9,000 suspects. Although he said he was able to narrow the number of suspects down to one, he never publicly or privately named the person, family members said. "


If I had 3 question I could ask him, it would be

1. To whom belonged the handwriting sample that. in your opinion. was the ONE and only match to the Zodiac handwriting that you found through your time on the case ? and why did you take that name with you to the grave ?

2. Do you think Zodiac faked his handwriting? or was any of the many handwritings he used his true handwriting?

3. Was the well known Zodiac handwriting written with the right or left hand?

I think his uncle was LLoyd Cunningham. (I think he is still alive)

The killer crossed his "t" low on the vertical stroke, Cunningham notes, and formed a distinctive "saddle" between the legs of his lowercase "m." He usually left generous spacing between lines, Cunningham says.

OK thanks PA, yes that sound plausible.
But it would be great if someone could ask Vince Repetto who his uncle was, in order to get 100% verification.

So, as far as the mailboxes are concerned, I don't think anyone knows why Tom thinks they were used by Zodiac.

Now, I'm not pointing the finger but I have to mention this other point.

This point is interesting because there is this long standing rumor that Toschi forged up to 2 Zodiac letters.

and rumors have even suggested that he (Toschi) was identified as the author by DNA testing in the 1990s, though there have certainly been no official pronouncements to that effect by the SFPD or any other source. An FBI memo from August 1978 states that analysis of the April letter was discontinued "in light of recent disclosures ... indicating that David Toschi had authored one or more 'Zodiac' letters" 2 though it must be remembered that the FBI received this indication from the SFPD, and not through its own investigation. In fact, Toschi was eventually reinstated to his post as a homicide Inspector.
