"Zodiac: Settling the Score"

Forgetting about Rader for a moment, what are your thoughts on Zodiac being a member of the military?

Thanks.

As far as military I think it's possible but not mandatory. Wing walkers and other military shoes and boots can be purchased at garage sales and surplus stores.

I do think Z had some skills as far as guns, hunting, tactics, etc. But those skills can be learned in the military or police, but also just through classes, books, hunting, target practice and life experience.

Sorry if this reply goes in twice, thought I submitted it but maybe I hit the wrong button, eek
Hmmm just to clarify about the military thing, Other than potential personal leave, the FBI was looking into whether Rader was part of the Civil Air Patrol, not sure if anyone had a chance to look at the map, it is an older map but illustrates a point

Regarding the military issue
Riverside College is a fifteen minute drive away via a major highway from March Air Force base
Lake Herman is a thirty minute drive away via a major highway from Travis Air Force base
The Presidio is within walking distance of the Stine murder

Any objections to this or insight, :)

No those are valid points. Graysmith and others have looked into Zodiac being current or former military. There are a lot of interesting possible connections. Other suspects are also former military. On the other hand, there are military bases all over California.

I don't know if you know much about the possible Zodiac crime of Domingos & Edwards murder in Goleta, CA, in June1963, but that was very close to a military base as well. In fact I think the ammo used in that couples murder was traced to a batch sold in several places, one of which was the nearby base, the name of which escapes me. EDIT : It was Vandenberg AFB.

Yes, indeed,
the watch at the Bates' homicide was traced to a military post, in England, if memory serves
the Wingwalker shoes were actually manufactured at Lackland, although they were distributed and sold elsewhere
the blue and silver car
there are a lot of indications in respect to the military

just a thought :)

Yes on most of those points. But the watch aspect has been disputed, not sure if there is definitive evidence on where it was sold.

The bomb disposal guide thought to be the inspiration behind Zodiac's bizarre costume, most likely distribued to law enforcement and military,
the ammunition of course which you brought up
also in Zodiac's letters he uses terms such as out of cover, silhouettes, targets, etc. agreed?

Yes, correct. However there are several possible inspirations for the Zodiac hood and costume. Ones that have been mentioned include medieval executioner outfits, hoods worn by outlaw Jessie James and others.

Also gun expertise, tactical skills and use of military language are not confined to active duty or former military. One example, my primary suspect did not serve in the military, but he owned and used guns and was an excellent hunter. I also show in his journal he wrote, in observing mine workers he would shoot with a rifle, that he "watched them from cover."

As you pointed out also, military shoes can be bought at many places. So there is a series of clues which point to an active duty or former military person, but which could also point to someone who never served, but developed some familiarity with guns, hunting, tactics and military terms.

Yes, point well taken
your suspect sounds interesting, what do you have connecting him if you don't mind me asking and don't worry, I won't write a book about him I promise, hehe :)

We have a section here called Suspects & POI's. In that there is a seperate section for all the major suspects, Ted Kaczynski is there. Also Allen, Gaikowski Kane, Mr. X and several others. Several of the named suspects have some military background and/or demonstrated knowledge or interest in guns, hunting, codes, bombs, etc.

In the Ted section I would advise looking in particular at two threads to answer your question. One is called something like "Kaczynski and Zodiac: Shared Words, Phrases and Handwriting", and the other is called "Facts and Evidence Ted Kaczynski as Zodiac ".

We also have sections for each of the confirmed victims and most of the possible victims like Bates, Domingos & Edwards, etc. Also sections on the codes, the confirmed letters and unconfirmed letters. The owner of this site, Morf, and myself, were able to do FOIA's and obtain some previously unreleased possible but unconfirmed Zodiac letters. And Morf was able to obtain a huge file of Zodiac material from the FBI, much of which was never released before.
