2017 Symposium on Cryptologic History

2017 Symposium on Cryptologic History

I got approved to talk again at this year's crypto symposium:

http://www.zodiackillerciphers.com/?p=648

Title: The Unsolved Zodiac 340 Cipher: Features or Phantoms?

Abstract: The Zodiac Killer’s first cipher was a simple substitution cipher that was quickly solved by amateur codebreakers. But after almost 50 years, his second cipher is still unsolved. Current research is focused on unusual statistical features found in the unsolved cipher. Are these features evidence of the underlying encryption scheme used by the killer? Did he use a type of classical cipher or invent a homemade scheme? Or are the features actually phantoms leading us down the wrong path? This talk will try to sort out the good and bad clues in the cipher text, and will invite the codebreaking audience to participate in this promising research.

I'm looking forward to it!

Yay! I am glad that you will participate again this year. I can not wait to see the videos and I really like the title (Features or Phantoms)

I think it went ok. I've been editing the video together and should be able to post it in a few days or so.

Fascinating symposium as always. Lots of great talks filled with amazing stories from the history of cryptography.

I really liked the presentation. You covered the significant observations. I think that it was wise to not discuss hypotheses for the observations, especially the P15/19 repeats. You didn't have a lot of time, and without the hypotheses maybe someone else will think up some fresh ideas for a cipher. Good job.

Very good & interesting. So much easier than having to read stuff. Glad my repeating pattern shape thingy was of use for something. At least I think it was one of mine.
