I decided to combine two topics into one thread, as they are related to each other and there are a lot of threads on this site.

The additional topic is new ideas for ciphers. Sometimes when I research different cipher types or work on the 340, I get ideas for variations of common ciphers or even new ciphers. Besides links to cryptography websites, this thread is also for people to record and share their new cipher ideas.

I am a big fan of simplicity, and like the idea of using a keyword. I was thinking of a very simple way to incorporate the use of a keyword into a route transposition cipher. And I was also thinking that it must be fast, simple and easy to use.

Here is a variation of a simple military route transposition that uses a keyword:

1. Start with a polybius square.
2. Black out the keyword letters.
3. Delete the letters that are not blacked out to create the unique inscription square.
4. Inscribe a message chunk ( shown left right, top bottom ).
5. Transcribe ( shown top bottom left right ).

For diffusion and polyalphabetism:

6. Write the keyword into the Polybius square, omitting repeating letters.
7. Fill in the rest of the square with the letters that aren't blacked out above.
8. Use a simple variation of Playfair, where if two letters are in the same column or row, just reverse them.

Yesterday I stumbled upon an excellent resource for classical cryptography that represents a great deal of work. It appears to be the text for a college class, and is very comprehensive. Anyone interested in classical cryptography should take a look.

One cannot help but admire the persistence of cryptographers in attempting to solve the Zodiac ciphers. However, I question whether there are actually messages hidden in the gibberish. I mean, the attempts of so many intelligent individuals have come to naught here. Further, Zodiac's perverse sense of humor might have generated a fraud designed to mess with the minds of investigators. To the chase: is there evidence that the ciphers in question do, actually, contain messages?

The answer to your question is yes. There are several statistical observations suggesting that there is a true message, but that is about all I know.

The Copiale cipher was solved after 250 years. It is not like a group of morons searching for "fool's gold."
