Did Melvin Belli ever have public alcohol problems or took on cases that dealt with alcoholism?

Thing is, back in the old days Happy Christmas was used because Merry Christmas denoted alcohol was to be involved in the celebration and, certain classes of people really didn't care for the public display of drunkness to be associated with this holiday. There is a little bit of an air with regards to drunkenness in this letter. "Help me. I'm drownding." Drownding in what? His sorrows? Highly unlikely. Drownding in happiness? Perhaps.

No idea. I wouldn't have though so though. Mel Belli was by all accounts similar to Zodiac in his desire for publicity, air of superiority and importance and like Zodiac believed he cannot be caught, Melvin couldn't lose a case and in fairness, I don't know his success percentage in defending clients but I know he wasn't such a big name and very sought after by accused criminals because all of his previous clients were all now sitting in jail having been found guilty that's for sure.
So could I see Melvin Belli representing the factory worker on a DWI charge? No. And obviously now I have stated this, someone will run off, pull up every case Mel had defended a client in Court and then post a reply: "W.C, 7 DWI cases, 3 Manslaughter after death caused by drunk driver, and 18 clients defended on charges of theft of alcoholic beverages from the Mall/Store."

So without knowing anything factually, I'd say the answer is no.

Ok. I am willing to accept that, unless/until, someone comes up with something different.

What about the other I mentioned? The separation of alcohol from the season?

A new theory..police checked Melvins clients if one of them might had been the author of this Belli letter. We also know that Z was out from Deer/Feather Lodge.

What if Z was not one of Melvin's clients but one of his opponents? Someone may assume that Z could have been a lawyer..I doubt it because of the possible military background of Z. But what if he just had lost a law suit previous to him being sent to prison, one in which Belli was his opponents advocate?

Most if not all media Z had sent letters to went to newspapers of the Hearst Corporation. I still wonder about Belli's connection to Hearst ('Sla') or the Sierra club.. There must've been one somehow, imo.

We don't know that Z was from Deer/Fern lodge, for all we know he was lying,in fact, we know he was as no prisoners had recently escaped.

Yes, I think it is important to distinguish between fact and what Zodiac claims as fact. He also killed 37 people, never left fingerprints and disappeared into the Presidio never to be seen again. One or more of those claims might be true but this is a good example of Zodiac almost certainly lying to suit his needs (controlling Hartnell and Shepard and convincing them that they better follow his commands). We should be careful about accepting Z's claims as fact, IMO.

Well I'd go one step beyond saying for all we know he may have been telling porkies about being an escapee from Deer Lodge, Montana and say I believe he was talking absolute Sh** and he hadn't recently been indulging in acts of escapology from prison's in a different State and he was, quite obviously, giving the two victims a reason for his wearing a mask to hide his face and why he would need to tie both up so he could get a good distance head start before they were able to inform police that their vehicle had been stolen. He was trying, in some twisted way, to up the chances of compliance from both Bryan and Cecelia by offering them his reasons for needing to take these course of actions. He had to make some rubbish up because he isn't going to have them lie down and comply if he announces "Take it easy, everyone stay calm, all I want and need is to stab you both repeatedly so if you'd both lie face down please while your bound in preparation...."
