For the record, that letter was determined to be fake.

It was claimed that Toschi had written this letter, Toschi denied it consequently, didn't he?

For the record, no it wasn't. It was suspected to be fake, having been written by Toschi himself, a charge which Toschi has always denied. As far as I am aware, the authenticity of the letter is questioned, but it is not proven one way of the other, if it is fake or genuine.

The SFPD flat out states it was determined it was not an authentic Zodiac letter...so did several handwriting experts, minus Morrill.

For what it's worth:

Also read the Toschi newspaper articles. Chief Gain states in the July 18, 1978 article that the letter is indeed a fake, not written by Zodiac.

IMO, Zodiac was truly remorseful and was suffering from a brain injury. It could have been something from childhood or his pre-teen or teen years such as an accidental injury. He knew enough about religion to make me think he had attended church and had possibly attended a college with a religious affiliation. He may have talked generally with someone about religion and attended services with that person at Easter and Christmas.

He would have known about heaven and hell and Lent and that Catholics are the only ones who have the Sacrament of Penance whereas the Protestants such as Methodists are almost identical when it comes to their churches and services other than they do not have Confession or kneelers in their churches and the seats are much more comfortable as theatre seats are vs. the pews in Catholic churches.

He may have had conversations with someone about Baptism and "baptism of desire" followed by speculation that there was probably "confession of desire" and was really feeling guilty and reaching out to Melvin Belli as he was someone he admired from what he'd learned about the man from the news.

Did he, though? I can't see anything he said or did that might indicate such a background.

The Zodiac seemed to believe he himself was GOD and had the right to take the life of who so ever he should choose to. Many Serial Killers are extremely arrogant and egocentric and overtly narcissistic. Bundy decided to represent himself to be centre stage in his own trial. D.C Sniper left a message for D.C Police declaring "For you Mr Police, Call me God." Gacy thought he was simply untouchable and buried so many people under his own house and throughout his stay on Death Row denied he was guilty saying someone else killed them, broke into his home, dragged the bodies into the crawl space, dug a hole, and buried them before letting themselves out without ever being seen. Gacy, strapped to a gurney and asked by the Prison Warden if he had any last statement to make, said "Yes, kiss my ass." No remorse or thought for any of his victims even at that point, only outrage and anger that the State dare execute such an important person!

Still doesn't mean he went to church or a religious college.

Oh I don't know, if Zodiac was that driven to maket himself and brag of his wonderful slave collecting then what better situation to do it than a confession box. Confidential, face is not visible, someone just the other side of the wall to listen to your need to brag. Yes I can quite vividly picture the scene....

Priest: Confess you sins my child, God is listening"
Confessant: I.....I.... I am the murderer of the taxi driver over by Washington & Maple Streets the other night. To prove this, I shall leave a piece of his shirt in this booth after I leave....

"Priest: Sorry my Child, but did you just say murder of a taxi driver?"

Confessor: "DONT EVER INTURRUPT ME PRIEST! THIS IS THE ZODIAC SPEAKING!"

Oh yes, I can just picture it now, the priest trying tip toe out of the confession box and running out of his church and down the street "Help, Help, I have Zodiac speaking, I have Zodiac confessing..." **Bang - Hit by bus.**

Meanwhile Zodiac still confessing to fresh air in the church.... "Father, why wont they wear some Zodiac buttons? It's not too much to ask. Father?

Hehe

Question:

Did Melvin Belli ever have public alcohol problems or took on cases that dealt with alcoholism?

Thing is, back in the old days Happy Christmas was used because Merry Christmas denoted alcohol was to be involved in the celebration and, certain classes of people really didn't care for the public display of drunkness to be associated with this holiday. There is a little bit of an air with regards to drunkenness in this letter. "Help me. I'm drownding." Drownding in what? His sorrows? Highly unlikely. Drownding in happiness? Perhaps.
