Anybody an idea why pleated trousers were "unusual at the time"?

They were not in style. Those pleated trousers were worn in the 1940's IIRC and perhaps later. Check out on Google or some old movies with Spencer Tracy.

They might have been in style for hippies :P or the younger generation, but people wore them then, just as they wear them today.

Seagull posted (somewhere) a newspaper clipping (I believe from 1969) showing them in an advertisement.

God I read that and all I can see is the scene from the Fincher movie where Toschi is asking him with that look of amazed frustration (don't know if this ever happened): "Didn't you just want to stop and ask him if he saw anything? Just ask him anything." I paraphrased that (been a while since I saw the movie), but the feeling of frustration is the dominant message here. Still don't understand how them two could have just passed the guy by so close to the scene even if they just asked "have you seen anyone?". Of course maybe that is what happened, but that's a whole 'nother discussion.
