Think I have found something:

Shepard and Hartnell are confirmed Z victims and is there an authentic writing on their Carman Ghia referring to the dates of the Ferrin/Mageau and Jensen/Faraday homicides. Hartnell had mentioned in his police report that Z claimed to having killed a prison guard in a 'Deer Lodge' or 'Feathers Lodge' prison in Montana. This however, until today, could not be confirmed.

However today I found an article about a prison guard who was stabbed in Deer Lodge County, Montana. The incident happened in the small town of Anaconda, a town with less than 10,000 inhabitants, and was the name of the prison guard 'Alvin Schmitt'. He had died of a knife attack only five months earlier than the attack on Shepard and Hartnell. The prison's name was or still is the Anaconda County Jail and had the incident been mentioned in an article of the 17-4-1969 Montana Standard edition.



It therefore is of highest interest, imo, who had killed the 44 year old prison guard Alvin Schmitt and therefore had gained his 'freedom'. The article can be found under

In fact, Alvin Schmitt died in the line of duty on Friday, April 11, 1969:

Officer Schmitt succumbed to stab wounds sustained two days earlier after being attacked by an inmate with a knife at the Oregon State Penitentiary. The inmate stabbed him ten times in the neck and chest. Officer Schmitt was transported to Salem Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his wounds. Officer Schmitt served with navy during World War II.

Seeing as this guy was recaptured and charged with murder, there's no way he could have been Zodiac.

The question is

a) did they capture the right guy
b) if he was conicted
c) if he could escape again

Eventually he was not the only one who could flee? Possibly there was a transport to an Oregon prison?

Without having any doubts, I nevertheless still would like to know more about what really had happened that day..maybe Grenfell just used to be a cellmate of Z?

Sorry for the late post QT. It was a busy day. The guard was living in and killed in Oregon and he had formerly lived in Anaconda MT. Not a Montana prison incident.

Thanks Seagull...ok, so it appears as if really NOTHING happens in Anaconda, Mt. Well. Except that Alvin Schmitt had left for Oregon. So I am back with my Feather's Lodge in California..
