County wise, yes. I know. It looks like a lot. But as I said we really are only looking at 52 cities and the bulk are very small.

And thanks for making the chart.

Soze, Why would a letter have two franking stamps on it, also what would the last digits, Highlighted in Green denote ?

I don't know about "franking notes". My understanding is that "franking" is only done for official, government correspondence. Otherwise, it's typically referred to a cancellation or a "killer".

As far as the number in green, I believe (and Soze can correct me) that is a postal district code. It looks like 1B which would indicate that the letter was either picked up or processed in Inner Richmond. Inner Richmond is very close to the Stine murder scene. Perhaps, he returned the next day to the scene of the crime, just to mail the letter from a nearby mailbox.

Sorry not to familiar with the terminology of the post in America. Just thought it was curious that it had been stamped twice. Would it have been so that it covered both stamps ?

I don't see the lines as indicating 2 postmarks or 2 different cancellations/franking. The postmark indicating date should have lines on both sides of it. It only has the one on the right followed by one below it (the extra one you question). This looks like a problem with the facer-canceler machine in my opinion; perhaps an overlap of mail trying to go through machine at one time.

I don't know off top of my head which Richmond (inner or central) that the 1B represents without having to look. Sorry. Going through personal things at moment and dont feel like looking. I told Chaucer where it was. I trust that it's inner.

Yes, I double checked and it represents Inner Richmond which as I said is very near the Stine murder scene.

Think about this though:

What if it doesn't say "1B"? What if it actually says "7B"?

7B is the district code for Pacific Heights which is literally a 6 block walk from where Paul Stine was murdered. It's possible Zodiac returned the next day with the letter and the bloody shirt to within yards of the crime scene to mail the letter.

That's incredibly brazen.

Chaucer,

Is there a source online where you can check these ?

No offense but it looks like a straight line 1 to me. Doesn't have that slant that a 7 would have.

Don't worry Chaucer, have now found on internet.

Sorry one last question what does it mean if there is no code on the Postmark, as in the Belli letter?
