San Francisco, San Mateo County, part of Santa Clara County.

So no in office cancellations in that time period?

We looked at this pretty hard about 6 months ago. Apparently correct, typical mail collected in San Francisco, San Mateo County and parts of Santa Clara County--even mail mailed in a slot within a local post office--was all processed and postmarked at Rincon Annex in San Francisco. Exceptions would be a letter handed directly to a window clerk at a local post office, but which apparently did not apply to any of the Zodiac SF letter postmarks. The Sunday hand-postmarks were anomalies, but I believe the consensus was they were still processed and postmarked at Rincon Annex--possibly because the machines weren't operating on a Sunday.

For a while it was thought possible that Mare Island mail was processed at Rincon Annex, but that was apparently incorrect.

As for the general dates of postmark, mailboxes often had 2 pickups a day, morning and afternoon, so it's conceivable a letter mailed in the morning would receive that day's postmark, while a letter mailed in the afternoon might not.

Do we know exactly when they sent away the new samples to the lab? I hear some people saying it was in 2018. Yet im sure one of the detectives in an interview said they actually sent it in a few months before earons was caught.

I think that they are having a problem with accepting the final results, because it is not matching Art Allen and they keep sending it back hoping it will change.

No one likes to admit they were wrong.

My hope is they did successfully get DNA to work with, but it is proving a heavy task to narrow down suspects due the lower quality of the DNA than in GSK's case.

jacob, I am confident they found a very good sample. I hope that they were able to get it into GEDMatch before they stopped helping LE.

VPD doesn't have the manpower available to help with narrowing down family members , like Paul Holes did. Holes had 5 or 6 others working with him on the GSK case. And they were doing it full time. VPD have new cases that come first, when they have time they can work on cold cases like Zodiac. They may not be in any rush if they believe Zodiac is dead and I am pretty sure that is what they believe.

No news is good news. If the sample they found was not a good one, we would have heard by now is what I think.

2020 will be a very good year, Happy New Year to everyone!

It's not like the same Detectives are working the case though. I think the current ones would love to clear ALA and have a chance themselves of solving the case. They would be the next Paul Holes. Fame and money. If they could move beyond ALA and find Zodiac.

I think they probs have a bad sample again and are unable to use it to rule out or match it to someone like ALA. Thus we are basically back where we started. No closer to being able to wrap this case up.

I am not sure how much you know about the latest DNA techniques and that it takes far less DNA to get a full profile. They no longer need to get if from under a stamp or the envelope flap, they can get a few cells from the letter itself! I have learned a lot about DNA and how it has advanced, I also get a tiny bit of information from inside VPD.

You are wrong about the new detectives working the case wanting to clear Art Allen, sadly they still believe Allen was the Zodiac.

( I am not guessing or "thinking" that, it happens to be a fact) The head VPD detective reads this site, or at least he did, he can and would call me out on what I post if I am not correct.
