I just don’t understand what they would have to gain from this. Why admit they have DNA (assuming that it is true), before they have used it to indentifing anybody yet. surely they would keep this close to their chest, why would you possible tell Z that your were onto him. Obviously we do not know for sure if it was LE that have acquired this.

Are they looking for some sort of reaction ?

You can't be serious? They do have the Zodiac's DNA , but are in the process of putting it into GED match to get the name of the Zodiac. They can't make an arrest until that takes place. So he has not been identified as of yet, that does not mean there wasn't any DNA found. Have you not watched the news on how the GSK was caught? If not I suggest that you watch it to see how it is done.

cragle,VPD still think Zodiac was Art Allen so they didn't think that making the announcement would harm the case. It was not the best thing to do until they get the name from GED Match in my opinion.

I'm also wondering about this. As usual, everything seems so confusing with this case!

It's far-fetched, it could be that they have suspects who are still alive and of whom we know nothing about, and this announcement is some kind of attempt to see if it causes any panic in any of those suspects thus eliminating some extra work.

Or then they are just extremely confident that the perpetrator is deceased and revealing new developments would make no difference.

Agreed. And even if LE was convinced all suspects were deceased, it's not like LE to operate that way.

If so that is a Very dangerous game to play. Surely this would not be standard procedure in cases like this, even if you believe your suspect was the man. It seems like a major Clusterf*** in the making.

They refused to show some of the known other Zodiac communications (Obviously I know due to being able to confirm a confession) but they are willing to offer this DNA news. It just doesn't sit right with me. Wonder what SFPD's stance on this would be.

True, but if they had success testing specifically the envelope flaps and or the back of the stamps, you wouldn't expect that evidence had been compromised.

Sandy, there's a step before they run it through Gedmatch -- they need to develop or sequence a DNA profile.

With 50 year old DNA that hasn't been preserved, accomplishing that is a crap shoot.
