Olivehurst,CA Valerie Lane/Doris Derryberry killed 1973

Postby hastingmj » Tue Jun 17, 2014 3:35 pm

I am Melanie Hasting, sister to Valerie Lane who was shot and killed along with her best friend Dorris Derryberry in 1973. If u have lived in olivehurst ever, then u know its a pretty close knit town. I was shocked when I seen that my sis was a possible victim of the Zodiac. Everyone around town has their own idea as to what happened but for the.most part we believe that the person who committed this horrific crime to two teens is still living and living the life and now is working spreading gods word. I wont say names because I dont want to offend anyone or get banned from ur site. I wish for anything in the world for my mother and our family to have closure...thats all

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing. Sorry to hear about your Sister, I would certainly like to hear more. Fortunately, we see old cold cases get solved sometimes so maybe this could happen with your Sister's case.

Welcome Melanie.

I second what morf said. Sorry to hear about your sister. I wondered if it was this site that mentioned a Zodiac connection but couldn't find anything. So I found mention of it here.

That's from 2008 by Starless. Was that where you saw the possible connection mentioned Melanie?

Yes I googled valarie and doris's name and that was a website that came up so I followed it. Its on other websites. I believe it was mentioned a couple times. Its really hard fir my mom because the arrest of joseph naso defintely brought questions because of doris's last name being derryberry

Yes, the double initials sure make one think of Joesph Naso. Hope this case is solved for your family can have some closure. Must be so difficult...

Hello and thank you for posting and sharing what happened to your sister and her friend. I cannot begin to imagine what this must have been like for you, your family, and friends. Hope is a good thing and I do hope you get the answers you deserve.

If you would like, please share the name of who you think the responsible is with some of us privately. You would be surprised what can be found out.

I really have different emotions of whether or not I should even say the name I believe. I dont want any problems or danger to come my familys way. We have all endured enough pain over the 40+ years this has went unsolved. Is there anyone reading this that is familiar with the olivehurst/linda/marysville area of yuba county in CA? If so are u familiar with this case or if you haved lived here, u may know some of the stories about why this tragic crime may of happened, retaliation, runaways, etc. I will talk to my mother n see how she feels about me posting a name of a suspected person and what she thinks I shld say or not. Its her im doing this for. Just trying to get her closure thats all

I understand...and you should NOT post publicly, that's for sure.

Don't forget to ask her some things about the case itself, if she is able to give you some answers. IMO it's ok to publish details about the case, even suspects, however you may want to let e.g. Morf (or Tahoe) know about the suspect's name. Guess an ~70 yr old guy - if still alive at all - wouldn't worry too much about what is written here..nevertheless respect, safety and privacy should be taken seriously though.

Melanie, I originally had found an article about this horrible case (Press Telegram, November 19, 1973), which says about the following:

The two girls were on a shopping trip and had been driven to a wooded area called Camp Far West Reservoir which is popular for picnics and parties, before being cut down by a number of close-range shotgun blasts. On 12 November, 1973, boys who were target shooting near a Bear River diversion dam found the bodies of the two 13-year-old girls who had been shotgunned to death. The victims were identified as the daughter of Margaret Joan Hasting and Dorothy Elva Derryberry, all of nearby Olivehurst. Both mothers had reported the girls missing and Sheriff Gary Miller said there was no apparent motive for the slayings. There was no arrest. The bodies of the two girls, missing about 20 hours only, were found east of Wheatland, shot to death. There was no apparent motive for the killing and there were no suspects. Nor could the killings be connected to any other recent slayings in the area. The girls were best friends, attended school together and reportedly were seen together on Sunday morning. The Lane girl's mother told sheriff's deputies Monday morning that her daughter had been missing since Sunday afternoon. Mrs. Dorothy Elva Derryberry also reported to the sheriff Monday that her daughter had been missing since Sunday afternoon. Both girls were fully clothed and had been dead less than 24 hours. There was no immediate evidence of a sexual assault. The bodies were taken to the Sacramento County coroner's office for an autopsy. One girl had been shot in the back and chest, the other in the side.

The girls probably were too young to having a party there on a Sunday afternoon, in November. One idea could be that it was an hunting accident, with a witness homicide, however it appears to be something different. If I understood correctly, your fathers home had been burglarized one day earlier, too? Although Valerie did not live with her father, is this correct?

With approximately 50° Fahrenheit I wouldn't expect them to have picnic either..so obviously they had e.g. used to play there or simply had talked to each other. Nobody would stay out at those temperatures for more than an hour or two, I'd say, so it is likely that the killer might have followed one of them? Would be interested if there do exist earlier articles as the one is about a week later?
