I would not consider Coronado "not all that far" from Riverside. I consider 110 miles pretty far in regards to a murder case.

That's true

Granted, 110 miles is a fur piece if you're going shopping. But, it's nothing for a young swab who's got a 48 or 72 coming. You can hitch, and get to Riverside from Dago almost as fast as if you drove your own car. I know; I was stationed in Dago, and lived in Colton, which is near Riverside.

If we are taking the assumption of Ross as the killer of CJB off the table for this consideration, that really hurts Occam's Razor. That's the only reason he is a Zodiac suspect. If him knowing her and being at the murder scene falls into the realm of coincidence, then anything else connecting him to Zodiac falls way below.

Actually it doesn't hurt Ross as being Z, it has been repeated over and over, and since before we ever knew who Ross was, that Z, whoever he was, could have written the Bates case letters and desktop poem, and had nothing to do with killing Cheri. Ross was still suspected by people, whether he killed Cheri or not, was in the RCC library and was identical to the sketch

Someone remind me: What indications do we have that Ross knew Bates, or at the least knew of her? Something about a wedding, I think, but I don't recall the details.

Anyway, a question: Do people think Ross' (possible/probable) knowledge of Bates is of significant importance if he did not kill her but only produced the written material in the case?

Ross's Brother Tim, married Cheri's Good Friend Bonnie in 1966. Between that connection, and the fact Cheri used the RCC Library where Ross worked, I think it's safe to say they knew each other. If Ross was disturbed, or had some unhealthy interest in Cheri, maybe hearing about her murder could have set off some thoughts or awoken some fantasy about killing, I don't know, that's just me speculating.

I believe Z was the writer of the Bates had to Die letters. Because those were sent from Riverside I believe Z had a connection with Riverside in one way or another.

The RCC connection and the connection of Ross to Cheri's best friend is interesting for Ross as suspect for the murder of Cheri Jo Bates. Is this proof he killed her and is also Zodiac? I dunno.
I also have doubt about the desktop poem being from Z.

The best thing to link anyone is the forensics evidence in the Z case and CJB case.

I don't know if Occam's Razor applies here, but the idea that two homicidal lunatics could have attended RCC at the same time in the 60s seems a bit of a stretch. If Z wrote the desktop poem, then it was Z who killed Cheri--simple as that.
