Ross Sullivan in Santa Cruz

Postby Seagull » Sun Aug 16, 2015 4:30 pm

It took me forever but I finally found a written record, other than his death certificate, for Ross in Santa Cruz.

This is from the 1968 Santa Cruz Polk's Directory. I looked in all available Santa Cruz Polk's from 1967 until his death. This is the only directory I was able to find him in. There were no directories for 1970, 1972, 1977.

We now have his employer and home address for 1968!

Might UC SC have records, or someone who was a longtime food preparer there who might remember him?

One of my HS yearbooks has a picture of the lunchroom staff... I wonder if UC SC yearbooks or publications might have some info/articles including Ross. For that matter, if he took some classes while there, maybe he's in a yearbook as a student, or volunteer with a drama club, or something like that.

Wow great find!

That place Ross lived is for sale. Wonder if this will change the value in any direction?

512 2nd Street, only a block or so away from his arrest around 900 3rd street.

Ross is not in any of the UCSC yearbooks, I checked.

Not really a surprise, but his 2nd street address is one block away from where he was arrested in 1968.

On Edit: I see Paul Averly beat me to it. He noticed same thing.

But I have another observation. UC Santa Cruz was on the other side of town. How did he get to school or his job I wonder?

2nd edit: the apt. looks large and he lived a block from a beach. I'm willing to bet rent was pricey. How was he able to afford this?

That property has a "studio" and I know that area was becoming run down by the late 70's. (don't know about Ross's time) But it seems likely his part time job could afford it. But yes, interesting he's not living on campus. It's a very long walk, sure there are buses. And the campus is more of a state park, with hiking trails and plenty of secluded areas.

Look at the ad next to Ross's name. My theory is that he bought a Blue Chevy at Prolo's.

I've often wondered also that while the family lived relatively simply (though the pics of Binghamton JeffP I think mentioned) were not as bad as they have become. And I actually have info and a pic of a house they moved to that was gorgeous at one time. their first house was a paronage associated with a church, now a parking lot. Anyway, I don't think you can be thrice Ivied and have come from a poor family, so perhaps an inheritance?

{I had also wondered how he met Harold met Harriet (if this has been discussed before, apologies), but I thought she might have gone to one of the seven sisters (back when women couldn't attend most Ivies), not cheap either. And since she was from Maine, I started with Smith in MA, as it was associated with Yale and think I found her. And Harold did attend Harvard after Yale. Smith is not cheap either. I also figured she was well educated, and hope to confirm that in the next couple weeks. She was in the outing club (don't know what that was) and did crew, listed as class of 1938. Again, might have had a big inheritance- crew was usually done at mainly at private/prep schools back then.}

Don't know, just surmising.
