I don't know about Ross having an interest in Ham Radio, but I had posted this about the Mt Diablo map-

from the 6/24/70 Oakland Tribune-
"WALNUT CREEK Mt. Diablo Amateur Radio Club will base a crew and "emergency" equipment... ...on top of Mt. Diablo Saturday and Sunday to participate in the nationwide Field Day..."
Two days before Zodiac mailed this map mentioning Mt Diablo, this article is printed...what timing. Was Z part of that club??

I think the timing of this news article, 2 days before the map & letter about radians was mailed is not a coincidence.

I agree that it's probably not a coincidence, it seems typical Zodiac, use stuff that he saw and read about during that time.

Btw morf13, I like your new signature. :)

Interesting that since 2007 you don't have to know morse code to get your Ham radio license. The licenses have to be renewed every ten years. It seems Prues last license was registered in 2004 and expired in 2014 the year after he died. I'm wondering if there is record prior 2004 of his other licenses? Would all the renewals be applied to the same call sign or does the call sign change with each renewed license? I think it stays the same...

Ham Radios are often used in emergency response situations - and I'm thinking that perhaps Prue had his ham radio in case there was ever a brush/forest fire (Hemet/San jacinto can get very dry) to listen in on frequencies of emergency responders and possibly give aid as a local. Ham radios are also used often by survivalist types.

The Mt Diablo article and the timing of the letter in relation to the date of the articles publication is interesting for sure.

call signs stay the same. there are a million reasons why someone would get into amateur radio. my uncle was a ham and it was simply because he thought it was cool to talk to people around the world.

Point is that Ham Radio and cryptography go hand and hand. IF Ross was into Ham Radio, it would explain how Ross, if he was Z, would know how to create ciphers.

Anyone could get a book on the subject, but one has to have a reason to take interest in the first place.

I would bet that the Harold J Prue that morf found is probably the right guy, but I do have to wonder if maybe Ross put Harold Prue as a joke because there was a man with that name that robbed a bank in Troy, NY in 1953 when the Sullivan family still lived in NY.

The guy who robbed the bank had the middle initial of W. They were close in age, but a couple years apart. Just another interesting coincidence.

don’t know if this is already posted, but I found Harold Prugh in the 1958 Glendale Directory. It says he was the “Physical dir” at the YMCA. This is the same directory that says Ross’ father was “Youth dir” at the YMCA and lived at 404 E. Harvard. I bet Ross was living with his father and working at the YMCA; he misspelled his boss’ name just like he misspelled his birth city.
