sorry alive been super busy. Went to the library not too long ago and it was closed for a week. Ugh. So I still need to get over there and do more research. It may take me a while. Busy time of the year for me :(

Pink,

It is so nice to hear that you are alive! I have been wondering about you these last few days and you must have picked up on that. I just want you to know that when you do get the chance to go back to the library, I will appreciate your efforts. Heck, I want to see the poem. :)

Thanks Smokie :) the poem is defo on my list of stuff to look for (at the top of the list really).

Morf, was it ever determined what employee checked out Cheri's books for her that night? An employee would need to see her library card and apply the 3 books to that card before she left with the books that night.

Another thread here references a newspaper article quoting a male librarian (no name) as saying he thought he saw CJB, but wasn't sure what time he saw her. As Seagull wondered, was that male librarian Ross?

Did investigators look into what employee/s closed up
The library that night?

We don't know Dave. I am thinking 1977 possibly. That letter was given to Vallejo Times Herald Reporter Dave Peterson by Bailey. In turn,in 1978,he mailed a letter to Dave Toschi asking that he look into Ross. By the way, perhaps the 78 letter from Peterson to Toschi should be added to your wiki timeline,if it's not there already,I will go back and look for it

i asked the same question a ways back. i would have to believe
it was back in the 60's? i guess there's no way to prove it, but
i just don't see someone having those concerns 11 years later.
doesn't the tone of it suggest an urgency that would be felt
soon after the murder of CJB. maybe Patterson just ran across
it in the mid 70's?

I kind of took the tone of the letter to be that she was nearly frustrated that so many people were being considered as Z except the very person so many at RCC had been suspecting for quite some time. She references when the library Director was heavily involved with the ACLU or something so they wernt able to implicate Ross back then In fear of being seen as insensitive and in turn risk being corrected/fired. I don't think the letter would have been sent until the 70's because the Riverside connection to Z was not made until the 70's. I agree with Morf that it was probably written around 1977. Maybe looking at whenever the library changed hands to a more relaxed director allowing Jo Ann To feel confident enough to send the letter would help establish a likely date the letter was sent. It seems that heavy handed director may have been what kept her mum for so many years.

I find there to be, seemingly, a tinge of jealously expressed by Joann when she writes about Ross being the "pet" of their "catalog boss". She goes on to say that, "she tolerated from him what she would not from anybody else". I think JB may have had it in for Ross and felt he was grabbing attention warrantied her.

First, I want to lead off with stating that Rossatonians is a brilliant name and made me laugh out loud pretty hard after having a pretty jacked up day today.

Second, writing such a letter to police under false pretenses would be a kind of risky and rude thing to do.

But, to devils advocate the devils advocate here, think about how many other people wrote similar letters to police suspecting someone they know to be Z during that time period? SFPD had over 2,500 suspects, if even at least 2% of the suspects were suspected due to a letter, that's still a letter wrote to police on 50 different people. So while I don't find the premise of JB writing the letter maliciously, to be that strong, I do also conceded that it is completely possible. And of course the retort I would expect is "Well, JB's letter, plus all the other people saying Ross was strange and did strange things, and his brother even thought he was Z!" And to that, my reply would be "I am sure many of the suspects are all strange people in one faucet or another, and there are TONS of people who claimed Z was a relative of theirs"
