He probably just had grown his hair, then by PH had shaved it into a crew cut. Both sketches have similar features (eyes, noses and lips). The Berryessa one tries to illustrate greased brown hair.
Since this thread is about Ross, it would make sense that at a time when long, natural hair was in style, Ross might have had greased up, out of style hair. Seems logical knowing how Ross was an awkward person.
I was just throwing out possible explanations. I think he did alter his hair in some fashion. As for the weight thing based on his description sounds like Zodiac probably carried his weight well. As an example most people are shocked when I tell them my weight as they usually think I'm 40 lbs lighter than my actual weight.
I, too have a thick build similar to Z (No I wasn't even born for any of his activities) which leads me to believe that most people would have a hard time giving an accurate weight.
